Singer Liam Gallagher has been fined for the second time after failing to attend a court appointment in New York.
In the latest addition to the high profile case, the former Oasis frontman was fined $5,000 for his non-attendance and was described in court as being non-compliant, with a “frivolous conduct” and a “wilful failure” to attend.
The hearing was to finalise the arrangements of his child maintenance payments to support a child born while he was still married to his now ex-wife, Nicole Appleton. Gallagher had a brief affair with a US journalist, Liza Gorbani, whom he met while she was interviewing him for a New York Times article.
He has never met the child, Gemma, who is now two years old.
Gallagher, 42, has three other children – a son Gene, 13, from his marriage to Ms Appleton, a daughter, Molly, 16, from a previous affair, and a son Lennon, 15, with his ex-wife Patsy Kensit.
The court heard that the singer has not asked to see his daughter and has not requested custody or any visitation rights.
Liam Gallagher’s lawyer, however, argued that Gorbani’s requests for child maintenance are disingenuous and that she wants the money to pay for an extravagant lifestyle. He claimed that far from living in poverty, her current living standard was high.
He also pointed out that Gallagher has made maintenance payments of $5,000 per month for the last two years and had reportedly said that he was happy to pay child maintenance.
The judge said the case will now go to trial, where the singer will have to encounter Gorbani, and will begin on March 26.
In addition to this case, Gallagher’s financial support arrangements are yet to be settled with his ex-wife and their son.
