An agency worker needed plastic surgery on his left hand after was dragged into a band saw that was not fitted with a guard.

Northampton Magistrates’ Court heard that the man was levering material into the saw at Brigstock saw mill in Kettering in August 2014 with a crowbar when he slipped.

A Health and Safety Executive investigation discovered serious safety failures but the firm has since fitted a protective box to prevent operators from standing too close to the blades.

Midlands Renewable Fuels LLP admitted an offence under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1999 and was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £876.50 costs and a £175 victim surcharge

HSE inspector Jenna McDade said: “Had the company taken suitable measures to ensure workers did not come into contact with the rotating blade, this incident would have been easily prevented.”
