The case of a fraudster who swindled an elderly Teesside woman out of £20,000 by abusing a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) has been described as “shocking” by a Wills and Probate expert.
Phillip Hugill has been warned that he could face jail after admitting nine charges of taking the money from the victim’s bank account to spend on himself.
The 60-year-old, of Penrith Road in Middlesbrough’s Park End estate, carried out the offences from 2011 to 2013. The lady concerned died in 2013 at the age of 88.
Hugill initially denied the charges but changed his plea to guilty during a hearing at Teesside Crown Court.
An LPA is a legal document that enables a nominated person to carry out money or health and care decisions on behalf of somebody else in the event of them being unable to do it for themselves because of illness, incapacity or other reasons.
Sentencing will take place on Tuesday October 18 and although Judge Howard Crowson granted bail, he said Hugill should not assume he won’t face a period of time behind bars.
“This is a shocking case which illustrates the need to choose your attorney with great care,” said Kerry Brundall, a Wills and Probate specialist based at Mack Solicitors’ Redcar office.
“Fortunately, the vast majority of attorneys act with integrity.”
