A Teesside solicitor has welcomed a rise in the age limit for jury members in England and Wales which ministers say reflects changes in society.
In the first change to the age of jurors for almost three decades, the maximum aged members of the public can be asked to serve will rise from 70 to 75 on December 1.
“Trial by jury is a fundamental part of our world-leading justice system and it is important that our juries reflect today’s society,” said Justice Minister Oliver Head.
“People are living longer, healthier lives, so it is right that our courts are able to benefit from the wisdom and experience that older people can offer.”
When the ruling comes into force from the start of next month, anyone aged between 18 and 75 will be eligible to be called for jury service.
As with all jurors, those over the age of 70 can apply to be excused if they feel unable to carry out their duties. However, fines of up to £1,000 can be ordered if people fail to turn up for service without a valid reason.
Lynda Monks, a Wills and Probate specialist at Macks Solicitors in Middlesbrough, said the move is sensible.
“This is an important amendment which reflects the demographic changes in our society and makes good use of the experience and knowledge of older people,” she said.
Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Sarah Rochira, said: “This positive step forward will help to challenge negative assumptions about older people and will mean they can make an even greater contribution to society.
“I have no doubt that our court system will benefit greatly from the wealth of knowledge and experience they will offer.”
Jane Ashcroft, chief executive of older people’s charity Anchor, welcomed the decision, saying: “Older people already contribute a great deal to society and represent an integral part of any local community.
“At Anchor we believe the knowledge and experience of older people is invaluable and I’m pleased that more will now be able to share their wisdom by contributing to the criminal justice system.”
It’s the first time the age limit has changed since 1998 when it was amended to 70 from 65.
