A North Yorkshire roofing firm has been fined £10,000 after a worker suffered a fractured skull when he fell more than 20 feet due to safety failings.
Mitchell Roofing Ltd, of Derwent Road, Malton, had previously carried out cladding work at Monk Bridge Construction Co Ltd in the village of Elvington, near York. This was done safely with all the appropriate precautions in place.
However, no such steps were taken to prevent workers falling through fragile parts of the structure or off the edge of the roof when the firm returned for the minor task of replacing light panels.
The worker sustained serious injuries after falling through an inner roof sheet and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) discovered the safety failings when it carried out an investigation after the accident.
York Magistrates Court fined the firm £10,000 with £1,355 costs after the HSE brought a prosecution under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
“Basic precautions for roof work and better planning of the job should have been applied,” said HSE inspector Julian Franklin. “Even short duration work on fragile roofs should be properly assessed and managed.”
