A court heard that an agency worker has been unable to return to employment since suffering life-threatening injuries in a fall in July 2014.
Kevin Quinn, from Bognor Regis, West Sussex, suffered fractures to his collarbone and ribs and also sustained a collapsed lung when he fell more than 11 feet through a gap in a floor.
The accident happened at Stanwick Marina, in Hampshire, where F&S Freeman Ltd was installing a floor using concrete planks during the construction of a new building.
Mr Quinn, who is 50, underwent further surgery on his injuries this year.
Fellow workers asked Mr Quinn to help them with some grouting. However, the 50-year-old fell through a gap in the floor that had been so materials and equipment could be lowered to the ground floor. Mr Quinn fell through the gap, landing in airbags below.
However, an inquiry by the Health and Safety Executive discovered that the airbags had not been sufficiently inflated and did not break his fall.
F&S Freeman Ltd, of Crossfield Industrial Estate, Lichfield, admitted offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Southampton Magistrates’ Court
fined the firm £5,000, ordering it to pay £855 in costs.
